The Grade 1 1 ¼ mile race has a purse of $750,000 and is for horses of four years old and older. The ‘Big Cap’, in its 76th year this year has been won by horses such as Seabiscuit (yes, that Seabiscuit), Spectacular Bid, Lava Man and Alysheba at some stage in their careers and this year’s race boasts a talented field. For the first time in the race’s history, the past two winners of the race – Game On Dude (2011) and Ron The Greek (2012) –take each other on, and both of these favourites come into the race with decent form.

Race favourite Game On Dude come into the race in fine form, having won the San Antonio Stakes in February in his last outing, and has earned a reputation as a top handicap horse via strong performances at this distance, though perhaps not as consistently as his owners would like, having won only twice in seven attempts in the distance with three second places. The six year-old took the honours in 2011 and has also won the last two editions of the Hollywood Gold Cup. His trainer, Bob Baffert, is convinced that Game On Dude is at peak condition and will not repeat recent disappointments, after finishing a lowly seventh in the Breeder’s Cup Classic after being the 6/5 favourite.

Ron The Greek, winner of the race on 2012, comfortably won the Sunshine Millions Classic in his 2013 debut in January, his first win since June last year, and will be confident going into this weekend’s race of adding to his career record of eight wins from 23 starts.

The two race favourites lead a talented and experienced field. Among these are Richard’s Kid and Called To Serve. Richard’s Kid, the winner of the Pacific Classic in both 2009 and 2010, has seen his form fade in the last six months, after placing second in last year’s Hollywood Gold Cup and fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Called To Serve, meanwhile, won two races at 1 and 1/8 miles last year, finishing strongly in each of those two races –the Grade 3 Discovery Handicap at Aqueduct and the Broad Brush Stakes at Laurel on New Year’s Eve. Saturday’s race will be Called To Serve’s first start in a Grade 1, as well as a first start in a 1 ¼ mile race.
