Bet On The Champions Mile

images (7)The Champions Mile takes place on Sunday at the Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong. With an incentive of automatic qualification to the Breeders’ Cup Mile, the Champions Mile always garners interest from the top horses and trainers, as well as the betting public. The winner of both the 2011 and 2012 renewals of the Champions Mile is in this year’s field, but Xtension is being given rather large odds, and will have to pull off an unlikely victory in order to claim his hat trick of victories at the race.

King Mufhasa 8/1

Pure Champion 8/1

Penitent 12/1

Xtension 16/1

Admiration 33/1

Helene Spirit 60/1

Xtension landed a surprise victory in this race last year, as the favourite for that race, Cityscape, came up short of the expectations that had been placed on him. That victory followed his win in 2011 and he now bids to become the first horse in the race’s history to win the title three times. But at 16/1, even the fact the he has won the race twice could not prevent the punters from staying away from him this time.

Instead, the horses that have received the most attention in the lead up to the race have been Packing Whiz and Glorious Days, as well as the remainder of the overseas entries, King Mufhasa and Penitent.

Irish gelding Packing Whiz won his last race, which was in early April, adding to his two wins earlier in the season. That win in April was his first race under the tutelage of Caspar Fownes, and he will be looking for a repeat performance on Sunday.

Glorious Days may hail from Australia, but has sure taken a liking to Asian tracks. Though his form this season has not been as consistent as the last, when he won four in a row at one stage, he comes into the race after a decent start to his campaign this time out. He has won two of his five starts this season, placing in the top three in the remaining outings. He has tasted success at the Sha Tin in the past, and is hard to look past as a leading contender for this race.
