Bet On The Magic Millions 2YO Classic

coco_2607948bUnencumbered will lead a strong field in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on Saturday, as he aims to make it five career wins from six starts. The Bjorn Baker-trained favourite will have to contend with a similar field to the one he beat in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes on 28 December, and was blessed with a good gate three in the barrier draw on Tuesday, making his quest for the $2 million prize that little less complicated.

The Testa Rossa colt has been one of the form horses this season, his only career loss thus far coming in the Men Of League Plate, which followed victory on debut in Sharp Plate on debut in October. Since that defeat, he won the Ascend Sale Trophies Plate before he was a surprise winner in the Wyong Magic Millions Classic and the BJ McLachlan Stakes, completing a fine preparation for the Classic.

All smiles after the good barrier draw, jockey Nathan Berry, who rode Unencumbered in all four of his career wins, is very happy with the horse’s preparation and is impressed with the way the two-year-old goes about his work.

‘I couldn’t be happier with him,’ Berry said. ‘I didn’t expect him to work as well as he did. He just breezed through his work, and he is just an ultra-professional. Nothing fazes him, he had a decent gallop without doing too much and he pulls up like he has a trot around the river.’

Another jockey who left the barrier draw happy was Oakleigh Girl’s rider Craig Newitt, after the Danny Bougoure-trained filly was drawn in sixth. The Snitzel filly, who will be looking to continue a trend of filly winners in the race on Saturday was favourite for the race at one stage, but lost a little bit of support after fading badly in her disappointing fourth place finish in the BJ McLachlan, but it seems punters haven’t abandoned the filly altogether, firming into her current price from out at $13 at one stage.

Newitt, who admitted he was to blame for the disappointing run in the BJ McLachlan, will be entrusted to bring up the third victory of his charge’s brief career.

‘Now I know her limitations we just have to draw a nice marble and if she leads she will lead but if they go hard she can take a sit off them,’ he said. ‘I wouldn’t swap her for anything and she is the best horse in the race.’

The only other horse at single figures for the race, Michael Hawkes’ Invisible, will look to follow up his debut victory in the TAB iPad App Plate on 28 December with a strong run on Saturday. Should he win, he will make history in becoming the first horse to win the race second up. His cause was boosted by a favourable gate 7 draw on Tuesday.
