The ante-post favourite for the race on Saturday is Colonel Mak, closely followed by Pearl Ice and Sir Reginald. Picking a favourite in sprint races of this type is always difficult, but the current form book suggests that these are the leading horses. A field of 27 makes it even trickier, though an each-way bet is always worth a thought.

Looking further down the field, An Saighdiur gets another crack at the race after finishing third in the race. The Andrew Slattery-trained horse was in the form of his life coming into the race last year, but lost out on the day to Mass Rally and Highland Colori. Though the six year old veteran hasn’t achieved quite achieved the same level of success this year, at 18/1 he’s not terrible value to repeat his competitive performance from last year.

Colonel Mak, TD Barron’s veteran gelding has a 17% win record since 2008 from 48 starts, and recent form is promising, coming second in her last race in Newmarket in August after winning in Pontefract in late July. Both those races came in Class 3 races, however.

Pearl Ice also has winning form coming into Saturday’s race, winning in Doncaster in Soft conditions just last week from 11/1 out. Sir Reginald was also a winner that weekend, coming in from 10/1, following a second place finish in Chester in late August. Fahey’s charge has had a disappointing season, however, with those two races being her only top 5 finishes this year. Recent form suggests, however, that she may be getting into her stride at just the right time for a strong back end to the season.

The going for the race on Saturday is expected to be Soft.
