The Dean Logan-trained Habibi heads the early antepost betting, and at +200 is favourite to take the finish line in front of the chasing pack. The filly will be looking to follow in the footsteps Silent Achiever, who last year became to the first filly to win the New Zealand Derby for close to twenty years. Habibi will be ridden by Vinny Colgan, who has an excellent New Zealand Derby record, having tasted victory in the race four times already.

Challenging Habibi will be Castlzeberg, the winner of the Waikato Guineas, who also placed second in the Avondale Guineas last time out. The remaining contenders include the winner of the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic, Fix, as well as the winner of the Karaka 3 year-old Mile, Choice Bro, who at +1400 presents an interesting each-way opportunity.

Looking at the form tips for the race, it is to be noted that the winners of the last two editions of the race have been the short-term favourites. The form book also presents further interesting details to be kept in mind: in the past six years, all winners have been entered in at least three races since December, they have all had wins in races of over 2000 metres or over before winning the Derby, and five of the last six winners of the race have either won or placed in their previous three starts. Of the horses that make up this year’s field, there are four contenders that comply with those form guides, and they are correspondingly the bookies’ three top picks – race favourite Habibi, Castlzeberg and Fix – as well as +10000 long shot Dubai Shuffle.

The 2013 New Zealand Derby takes place on Saturday 2 March, 15:45 Sydney time/ 1 March, 21:00 EST.
