Bet On The 2013 Rabobank Champion Hurdle

Hurricane Fly (left) wins the Rabobank Champion Hurdle at 2012 Punchestown FestivalPunchestown hosts the Rabobank Champion Hurdle on Friday, with race favourite Hurricane Fly looking good to notch up his fourth successive title at the event. The Willie Mullins trained horse has won the event since 2010 and has, perhaps understandably, been picked as the early favourite for this week’s race by the bookies as well as the punters. The short-odds favourite’s main contender for the race is being regarded as Rock On Ruby at this stage, who at 7/2 represents the bookies’ second best pick.

Rock On Ruby lines up against Hurricane Fly again this year in a bid to improve on last year’s promising showing. Rock On Ruby has beaten the defending champion already, winning the Champion Hurdle last year, but finished behind him by two and a half lengths in that renewal in Cheltenham last month. But the horse’s trainer, Harry Fry, will be confident in the knowledge that his horse has it in him to stop Hurricane Fly, even though he knows that he will not be an easy task.

Fry: ‘You never know, Hurricane Fly might have an off-day and we’ll be there to capitalise if he does. It’s hard to make a real case to say, ‘Right, we’re going over there to beat him’, especially with the ground conditions, but our horse is very fit and well.

Further down the field, Rebel Fitz’s trainer Michael Winters will take his horse into the race, even though the conditions probably don’t suit him very well. Although he is confident and happy with the horse’s form over the last little while, he feels that the rain that has been around Punchestown over the last few days will make the task difficult for his entry.
