A lot of the talk going into the race this Saturday is the training debut of former multiple Group One-winning jockey Johnny Murtagh, who leads Fort Knox into battle for the first time. Fort Knox is coming into the race after an impressive win in a Guineas trial at Leopardstown and is 11/2 for the race – not terrible value for this horse in this field. Murtagh is confident going into the race: “Fort Knox has come out of his last race well and he’s been doing everything nicely. Crucially he’s had no hiccups since then. He’s going nicely at home and I’m really looking forward to it.

But Murtagh isn’t the only trainer with his eye on the race. Richard Hannon, Jim Bolger and Aidan O’Brien all have interesting prospects in the field. Hannon has Van Der Neer in the race. Van Der Neer was third at Newmarket and at 4/1 second-favourite, at present, maybe his odds aren’t as long as punters might be comfortable with.

Bolger has Loch Garman and Trading Leather, both at 8’s, and who both finished in second in recent Derby trials. Talking of Trading Leather, Bolger said: “He has come out of the Leopardstown race (well) and the plan is to run him in Saturday’s race.

O’Brien has a few entries in the race himself, with Cristoforo Colombo and Mars, both of whom were narrowly out of the placings at Newmarket. Cristoforo Colombo is currently the favourite for the race, however, with the colt currently going at 11/4, which is perhaps surprising considering that his fifth place at Newmarket has been his only race this year.
