Bet On The Vinery Stud Stakes

download (1)Race 7 on the cards at Rosehill on Saturday will be the curtain raiser for the Golden Slipper, and naturally most of the attention will be on the main event of the day. However, a strong pack has assembled for the race, with several horses in the first lines of betting separated by just a few points. The Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Solicit and D Logan’s New Zealand galloper Rising Romance are joint-favourites for this Group 1 race, followed by Guy Walter’s Zanbagh.

The co-favourites have been drawn in the middle gates, with Solicit and Rising Romance occupying gates seven and nine respectively and have fared better than their closest rivals, Zanbagh and Lucia Valentina, who will start the race in gates 19 and 11.

Solicit has been in winning form this season, winning in Group2 and Group 3 races before landing in fourth in a listed 1600-metre race at Moonee Valley. She started that race as favourite, but lost out to Marianne that day. Her last two races saw placed finishes in Group 2 races, and question marks remain whether Solicit can handle the jump in class to Group 1 fields, though her fine figure and form has attracted a lot of interest from punters this week.

The other favourite, Rising Romance, has seen less action, but was second in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby over 2,400 metres and possesses the goods to put in a strong run for the race. This will be the first time that Logan’s horse runs in Australia, and it will be interesting to see how she fares.

Zanbagh was desperately unlucky to drawn that far out, and will have a bit of mountain to climb to get back on track with her main rivals, but if she gets a god start she should be good to follow the running. Her latest form suggest so, in any case. She was second in the Group 1 2500-metre Crown Oaks in Spring, and won last time out in the Group 3 Kem Grange. The wide berth might be a problem, but there is enough in this horse to interest punters.

The John Sargent-trained Miss Mossman will also be worth a look at in her first Australian start, with the winner of the Group 1 New Zealand Oaks looking to make a mark in the country.
